Lola Family Home | Mountain View
Completed 2025
This Mountain View family home began as a reinvention for a new chapter. The house was taken down to the studs—literally, with only two original studs remaining—and rebuilt within its existing footprint, with a new second story added above.
Because the project was so close to a new build, the challenge became how to give the house a sense of memory. We looked to the neighborhood, to Mountain View's history and the broader history of California architecture and design, and to the clients’ own sensibility: practical, warm, and not too serious. Locally made tile, fully custom built-ins, and work by regional artisans bring a sense of place to the house, while gallery-like walls give the family room to live with art, books, and the ordinary accumulation of daily life.
The result is a home that moves easily from one space to the next, with room for a growing family and enough craft in the details to feel as though it has always belonged there. Comfortable, playful, and carefully made, it was designed to last well beyond this generation.
